The SDC is a tax on passive income — dividends and interest — earned by tax residents who are also domiciled in Cyprus. Non-domiciled residents are fully exempt. Recent reforms reduced dividend SDC to 5% and abolished SDC on rental income.

  • Dividends: 5% for domiciled residents (reduced from 17%).
  • Interest Income: 17% on gross passive interest (3% for certain bonds).
  • Rental Income: SDC eliminated — now under standard income tax rules.
  • Exemptions: Non-domiciled residents pay 0% SDC.

Under the tax reform effective January 1, 2026, Cyprus abolished the DDD rules for all profits earned from January 1, 2026 onwards. Companies can retain post-2026 profits indefinitely without triggering notional distribution charges or SDC.

  • Abolition Date: DDD no longer applies to profits from tax year 2026 onwards.
  • Transitional Window: Profits up to Dec 31, 2025 still follow the 70% distribution rule (deadlines: Dec 31, 2026 for 2024 profits; Dec 31, 2027 for 2025 profits).
  • Actual Dividend SDC: Reduced from 17% to 5% for domiciled individuals.
  • Disguised Dividends: New 10% tax on unauthorized private use or below-market disposal of company assets.
